This book has a lot more going for it than I thought it would have. It had more depth than I had expected and I really enjoyed the way the characters were written and the turns that the plot took. The side characters were written just as well as the main ones. Sure there were some things that I couldn't help but roll my eyes at but honestly I kind of liked those moments even if they were very over done and rather cheesy. If your looking for an easy read but also something that has more depth to it this is for you.
“This wasn’t what I’d intended to happen in the beginning. I had imagined finding a way for me to heal too while I helped him. It was a way for me to find peace. But we had become something more. Something I never imagined."
The book follows two different points of view. Firstly Maggie Carleton’s a girl whose life fell apart when her father murdered her mother. Not speaking is her way of coping, after moving to live with her Uncle and Aunt she still hides away her feelings and her sorrow. And the other protagonist we have is West Ashby. To everyone who knows him, West Ashby has always been that guy: the cocky, popular, way-too-handsome-for-his-own-good but even though he's putting on a big show on the outside; on the inside he’s actually battling the grief that comes with watching his father slowly die of cancer. As West’s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father—so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won’t tell anyone else. “In life, we often have to make decisions that aren't easy. But it doesn't mean they aren't right.” Most of the characters were developed in a very realistic way, but I did find the odd moment to be rather unbelievable. Even though there were problems with this book and they weren't dealt with the way I'd hoped I still enjoyed reading it. “Pain comes to all of us some time or another. Its how we learn to cope with it that determines our future.” I believe that the main characters in the next book are actually side characters from this one. I actually grew to like the side characters quite a lot and I was really was intrigued by several of them in this book so am very happy that I will get to find out more. I feel like some things weaved throughout this book were definitely just setting up for the next one because we didn't really get answers, but I guess I'll find out soon. Overall I'm really glad I picked it up and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. 4.5 Stars
